Asdrubal Cabrera’s breakout showing in the batter’s box and jaw-dropping defensive displays made the Indians shortstop a frequent topic of conversation this past season. Through it all, manager Manny Acta kept reminding reporters of a critical fact.
“People forget how young he is,” Acta said. “He’s maturing overall — as a person, as a player, as a shortstop and as a hitter. It takes time.”
What did not take long was for Cabrera to emerge as a leader for the Indians during the 2011 season. Given his impressive performance, it came as no surprise that the Cleveland chapter of the Baseball Writers’ Association of America named Cabrera this year’s recipient of the Bob Feller Man of the Year Award.
